A Guide to Study Abroad in Germany

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can study in Germany without knowing German! There are many English-language study abroad programs in Germany. That being said, one of the biggest perks of studying abroad in Germany is the potential to pick up new language skills.

Germany is a great place to study abroad for many reasons. High quality study abroad programs, historical sites, and the rest of Europe sitting at your doorstep all mean you should study abroad in Germany ASAP!

It’s simple enough to study abroad in Germany as an American or EU student. You’ll need to apply for a program, either through your university or study abroad provider. Once accepted, you’ll need to pay program fees, get insurance, and book your flight. American students will also need to apply for a Resident Permit after arriving in Germany.

It depends. You probably can’t study abroad in Germany for free if you’re studying through your university or a study abroad provider. However, if you’re an international student studying in Germany full time for your degree (as in, enrolling in a German university) then fees will be practically free compared to US tuition.

Study abroad costs in Germany are typical to anywhere else in the world. If you’re from Europe or the eastern United States, you can expect somewhat affordable flights. In all, you can expect a summer or semester in Germany to be comparable to your tuition at home, with additional costs for room and board, insurance, and your visa.

Only international students who have Student Visas are permitted to work in Germany, up to 20 hours per week.

American and EU study abroad students do not need a visa to study in Germany, but American students will need to apply for a residence permit when they arrive. This will allow you to study abroad in Germany for up to a year. Full time students will need a Student Visa.
